Are free tokens always a scam?

I was looking in my wallet today and saw that I was randomly given 1000 MEMEAI tokens on binance smart chain. I’ve never even used BSC. Looking at the address that sent these tokens to me, I see that they are spamming 1,000 tokens to tons of addresses.

Normally I’d ignore this, but coingecko says that each token is worth $0.67, so this is a significant amount of money. This must be a scam, right? How does it work? Or, should I figure out a way to get some BNB and use it to cash this out?
